Local Government Councils in Malawi constitute a single-tier, democratic system established under the Constitution and the Local Government Act of 1998. Consisting of 28 district councils, 4 city councils, 2 municipal councils, and 1 town council, these 35 authorities aim to promote local development, provide essential services (health, education), and enhance civic participation. They are, for the most part, funded by central government grants.
